When you are advertising for a position with your business, it is important to consider what type of position you are looking to fill. There is not anything wrong with a cheap or fast hire, you just need to ensure that the role to be filled matches the type of person you are looking for. While we would all love to hire a quality, inexpensive person yesterday, you really can only choose 1 category that each hire will fit into.
Marketing suggestions for each category:
Fast
- You need help right NOW! This type of position is usually temporary until you can get more quality workers later on.
- Expect to pay more to have someone start right away.
- Include in your advertisement that the position starts immediately. I.e., “Hire today, check tomorrow.”
- Do not include a long list of requirements. For a fast hire, you should not be expecting high qualifications.
Cheap
- Cheap labor is best used for mundane tasks.
- Consider outsourcing through upwork.com or fiverr.com for any task that is completed online. Many foreign applicants are highly qualified at a reduced price.
- Because these positions have a high turn over, automate the training as much as possible.
- Be sure to advertise for other benefits that they will receive other than money. Think of prestige, environment, flexibility in hours, etc.
Quality
- A quality person will add real value to your business. It takes time to find the right person.
- Include every major qualification that you would like your ideal candidate to have.
- Make hiring a multi step process to weed out less serious candidates before the interview.
- Showcase the importance of the position in your advertisement.
- Be prepared to pay more for the ultimate candidate.
